The Gold Reading Award celebrates schools where reading is truly at the heart of everyday life. In the official completion letter, Laura Buczko, Literacy Team Leader, on behalf of One Education, recognised the commitment and knowledge shown by our school in building a successful reading curriculum. The letter highlights how our approach supports children to develop the skills, passion and enthusiasm they need to become confident readers.
Our Headteacher, Kari Anson, said:
“2026 is the National Year of Reading, so I am delighted and incredibly proud that Brays has received this recognition. It is a testament to the efforts of the whole school community, including the support of the Forward Education Trust’s reading lead. #BraysBelonging”
Alongside the formal award, Alice Pepper, Education Consultant, provided detailed feedback celebrating the quality and care shown across our reading provision. Alice praised the thoughtful and personalised ways reading is brought to life in our school, including the links between books and staff and pupil favourites, engaging reading experiences, and the inclusive opportunities provided for children and families.
At Brays, we believe that you can’t be what you can’t see, and that representation matters. Our carefully chosen reading spine reflects the community we serve, helping children see themselves — and others — represented positively in the stories they read. We are especially proud of our signed author copies from Grandad Wheels, which have become much-loved by our pupils and help bring stories to life in a memorable and meaningful way.
Our reading strategy also recognises that reading is about much more than books and text alone. Children learn to ‘read’ the world around them — from symbols and signs to body language and visual cues. Just as many people recognise the golden arches of McDonald’s without needing to read the word, we help our pupils understand that reading is a vital life skill in many different forms.
Alice also highlighted the strong assessment and progression of reading across the school, noting the inspiring reading environments and the dedication of staff in supporting children at every stage of their journey. She praised the passion and expertise shown by staff and the positive impact this has on children’s confidence, curiosity and enjoyment of reading.

Thank you to our families for supporting reading at home and being such an important part of this journey.
