Join Brays School Academy Community Council and bring your experience, ideas, and connections together with others who want to strengthen education and create opportunities for pupils, families, and staff.
A message from the Headteacher
At Brays, we believe that strong partnerships with families, local organisations, and the wider community help us provide the very best opportunities for our pupils. Our Academy Community Council brings together people who care about supporting some of Birmingham’s most vulnerable children and who want to make a positive difference.
Council members help us understand different perspectives, build valuable community links, identify new opportunities, and champion the work of Brays. You do not need experience in education or governance. We are looking for people with passion, insight, and a commitment to helping our school community thrive. Come and be part of #braysbelonging
Kari Anson
Executive Headteacher
Why this matters at Brays
Brays School serves children and families from across Birmingham, Solihull and Sandwell. We provide specialist education for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties, severe learning difficulties, physical disabilities, sensory impairments and complex medical needs. At the heart of everything we do are our Brays values of #belonging #teamwork #respect #equality #kindness and #safety.
Building strong community connections is vital because our pupils thrive when they have access to meaningful opportunities, experiences and relationships beyond the school environment. Through partnerships with families, local organisations, businesses and community groups, we can provide access to enrichment opportunities and support independence. By joining our Academy Community Council, you can help champion Brays, strengthen community links and play a part in creating lifelong memories for some of the city’s most vulnerable children.

What will the ACC focus on?
Every Academy Community Council works within five shared areas. At Brays School, these will be shaped around the needs and opportunities identified with the Headteacher.
- Enhancing the school experience and adding value to opportunities for pupils.
- Championing equality, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Building meaningful relationships with the community and partner organisations.
- Sharing insight about the school’s context with the Trust Board.
- Positively contributing to the wellbeing of pupils and staff.
During its first meeting each year, the ACC will agree a simple community impact plan and identify the activity it wants to take forward.
The difference you could make
You might contribute by:
- bringing a parent, carer, professional, voluntary, or community perspective;
- helping the school understand barriers, experiences, or opportunities more clearly;
- connecting the school with people or organisations that could support pupils and families;
- taking part in purposeful school visits and listening to pupils and staff;
- helping agreed projects, events, or partnerships move forward;
- sharing insight that can inform decisions and priorities across the Trust.
You are not expected to do all of these things. A strong ACC brings together people with different strengths, experiences, and connections.
We would particularly like to hear from
We would love to hear from people who share our passion for improving opportunities and outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We are particularly interested in hearing from current and former parents and carers, former pupils and their families, local faith and community groups, professionals working in health or social care, and representatives from charities, businesses, sports or cultural organisations.
However, you do not need to fit into a particular category to get involved. If you are enthusiastic, committed, and can bring new ideas, perspectives, skills or connections that will help Brays School flourish, we would be delighted to hear from you. Together, we can strengthen our community, create new opportunities for our pupils, and make a lasting difference to the lives of some of Birmingham’s most vulnerable children.
What is the commitment?
Members are expected to:
- attend three formal meetings each year;
- visit the school once each term for an agreed purpose;
- contribute to relevant actions, events, or partnerships where practical;
- complete required induction and learning;
- follow safeguarding, confidentiality, and conduct expectations;
- serve a four-year term following formal appointment.
School meeting arrangements:
17th November
29th April
4th June
All meetings start at 4.45pm
You do not need previous experience
You do not need to have been a governor, work in education, or know how a Trust operates. You will receive induction, required learning, and ongoing support.
We are looking for people who care, listen, ask useful questions, work constructively with others, and want to make a difference to the whole school community.
Register your interest
We welcome expressions of interest throughout the year. Registering your interest is the first step and does not commit you to accepting a role.
After you submit the form, Kari Anson, Executive Headteacher will contact you to arrange an informal conversation. If the opportunity appears suitable, we will explain the formal application, checks, appointment, and induction process.
Bring your experience. Build connections. Create opportunities.
Help Brays School strengthen education and its relationship with the community.
