Celebrating World Book Day 2024

This week, we’re celebrating World Book Day, which provides a fantastic opportunity for our children to share with us their favourite books, including some key favourite sensory stories! This week, we’re celebrating World Book Day, which provides a fantastic opportunity for our children to share with us their favourite books, including some key favourite sensory stories! Books are a great way to learn about the world around us, spark our imagination and further our understanding of topics that interest us.

At Brays School in order to cater to our diverse range of pupils, each with their own unique reading preferences and capabilities we have a range of reading materials. There really is something for everyone when it comes to books, and we love being a part of each child’s reading journey.

Our theme for World Book Day this year will be Nursery Rhymes / Bedtime Stories. We have the following planned:

  • Dressing up: On 7th March all pupils are invited to dress as their favourite fairytale character or wear pyjamas, however we know there is a cost of living crisis so families please don’t feel pressured. The focus of the day is reading for pleasure and to promote a love of books.
  • Bring in a Book: Children can bring in their favourite book from home. Parents can also send any links to any video versions of stories they enjoy (from youtube or cbeebies bedtime stories).
  • Literacy activities: Teachers will be doing literacy-based activities throughout the day for their classes. We’ll also be posting what our favourite books are on the class stories page on Class Dojo.
  • Sensory fairytale assembly: Group 1 (Lively Lions, Caring Cubs, Super Swifts, Jolly JellyFish, & Cool Cats) will be doing lines from stories and sensory challenges. Group 2 (Wriggly Worms, Talented Turtles, Busy Bees, & Cheeky Cheetahs) will be doing lines from stories & group challenges.
  • Brays Book Trolley: At the end of each assembly the new ‘Brays Book Trolley’ will be introduced. The trolley will be taken round once a week for classes to choose books to borrow. The trolley will have a selection of texts linked to the current topic as well as a diverse mix of various other texts because representation matters ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’ so the characters in the books will represent our community e.g. characters who are wheelchair users.
  • The Masked Reader: Each evening at 6pm a mystery reader will be reading a bedtime story (Posted on Class Dojo).
  • Lunchtime Story time: Lunchtime supervisors will be hosting storytelling sessions during playtimes and lunchtime.

We look forward to a brilliant week celebrating books!

Masked Reader Initiative

During the week we held a ‘Masked reader’ Initiative. Every day at 6pm a video was posted on Class DoJo over the week and families would have to guess the ‘masked reader’. Here is a video from the week – Did you guess who it was?
